Thyroid Nodule <1cm and Low-Risk Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma: What are today’s Management Options?

چکیده

The referred ATA Guideline [1] eliminates the biopsy from the management of the sub centimeter nodules, suggesting repetition of sonography every 6-12 months. The committee justified this action, to indicate FNAB only for suspicious nodules above 1cm, by the indolence of the papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) and because these tumors rarely present ETE, cervical lymph node or distant metastasis, especially in individuals over 60 years of age [patients younger than 40 years are at increased risk for tumor growth (5.9%) and cervical lymph node metastasis (2.2%), when compared to those over 60 years, 5.3% and 0.4%, respectively; p <0.05] [2].

MiR-324-5p assists ultrasonography in predicting lymph node metastasis of unifocal papillary thyroid microcarcinoma without extracapsular spread

Ultrasonography is the first choice of lymph node metastasis (LNM) detection which is crucial for therapeutic options of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). However, the sensitivity of ultrasonography in detecting LNM of PTC is relatively low; especially in central LNM. MiR-324-5p has been reported to play important roles in the metastasis of various cancers. To explore the relationship between miR...

Thyroid Papillary Microcarcinoma: Etiology, Clinical Manifestations, Diagnosis, Follow-up, Histopathology and Prognosis

Background: Thyroid carcinoma is the most common malignancy of the endocrine system. Coincidental thyroid papillary microcarcinoma in a patient treated for a toxic adenoma of the thyroid.

Thyroid carcinoma is not uncommon in patients with hyperthyroidism. However, the risk of malignancy in patients with autonomously functioning nodules continues to be underestimated in clinical practice, possibly due to the belief of rare co-existence of a "hot" nodule and thyroid carcinoma. We present hereby a man with hyperthyroidism due to a thyroid toxic adenoma, who was subjected to surgery...

A Case of simultaneous occurrence of Marine – Lenhart syndrome and a papillary thyroid microcarcinoma

BACKGROUND Marine-Lenhart syndrome is defined as the co-occurrence of Graves' disease and functional nodules. The vast majority of autonomous adenomas are benign, whereas functional thyroid carcinomas are considered to be rare. Here, we describe a case of simultaneous occurrence of Marine-Lenhart syndrome and a papillary microcarcinoma embedded in a functional nodule. CASE PRESENTATION A 55 y...

High prevalence of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma in danish patients: a prospective study of 854 consecutive patients with a cold thyroid nodule undergoing fine-needle aspiration.

We aimed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound (US)-guided fine-needle aspirates (FNAs) obtained from 854 consecutive Danish patients with a scintigraphically cold thyroid nodule in a borderline iodine-deficient area. Clinical, sonographic, and pathological findings in patients with a cold thyroid nodule undergoing US-guided FNA were prospectively registered. 408 patients underwe...
